Over the years I've learned that you can work nights and still get a lot done during the day if you just train yourself not to sleep. I was able to practice that theory this past weekend.
On Saturday a friend and I learned that James White was going to be in our town for the first time in years, and was speaking on, of all things, Romans 9. Neither hell nor high water nor sleep deprivation was going to prevent me from seeing him, so off I went.
Anyone who follows James White knows that he has an affinity for "colorful" ties, so I figured I ought to find a Vikings tie that I could give him just in case I got to meet him. I had a chance to talk to him right before his first session, and I must say, he's about the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. He has this reputation for being arrogant, mainly from people who don't like having their theology torn to shreds, but nothing could be further from the truth. I gave him the tie and he said he loved it, and I thought "yeah, right," and then he chatted with us for a few more minutes before he had to go. Moments later, as he's getting up to take the stage, I notice that he is now wearing the tie.
Listening to James White unpack Romans 9 made my day even more than the fact that he did it in a Vikings tie. I love the sovereignty of God and I love listening to the sovereignty of God proclaimed by people who love the sovereignty of God. I would highly recommend going over to the Signet Ring Ministries website and finding out how you can get a dvd copy of this conference if you feel the same.
Then it was off to the Vikes game on Sunday where I got to break out my 84 jersey for the first time in six years.
The Vikings beat the Cowboys 24-21 to cap off a near perfect weekend. I paid nothing for the conference on Saturday which was attended by less than a hundred people, and I paid $275 for my ticket to the Vikings game which was attended by over 60,000 people. Someday all the scales will be balanced properly, but it was a reminder of where we still live.

You saw James White?
*Jealousy ensues*
