After reading through the resolutions of JE this past weekend I was compelled to write down a few of my own. I came up with 31 which I will no doubt be adding to in the future, but this is where I'm at right now, and like JE, I must start by saying...
Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God's help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will, for Christ's sake.
- Resolved, whenever I catch myself attempting to trust in anything other than Christ as the grounds of my justification, to immediately beat my breast in repentance and beg for mercy.
- Resolved, to never think of any good deed as deserving of a reward, or as anything more than my duty.
- Resolved, never to go a day without reading the Bible as long as I live.
- Resolved, when I feel that antinomian spirit rising up in me causing me to excuse a future sin for the sake of grace, to immediately do all I can to fight against it.
- Resolved, to act as I would wish I had acted if I were watching a replay of my life.
- Resolved, never to pass up a clear opportunity to share the gospel with someone for the sake of my own comfort and ease.
- Resolved, to never cease asking God for things that are agreeable to his will, however long it takes.
- Resolved, to pay close attention to recognize things that are answers to prayer, especially those that involve suffering as an answer to prayer.
- Resolved, never to do anything out of pride, and when I do, to remember that the things I regret in life were all done out of pride.
- Resolved, to examine all criticism, even if it seems unreasonable.
- Resolved, to endeavor to go to bed every night loving Christ more than I did the night before.
- Resolved, never to avoid things that make me tremble out of fear of God, but rather, to let them have their full effect.
- Resolved, never again to pursue a relationship with a woman if I am not seeking first the kingdom of God in such action.
- Resolved, [Proverbs 12:23].
- Resolved, never to look twice.
- Resolved, when I fail to tremble at things that have made me tremble in the past, to examine why.
- Resolved, never to view the events of my day apart from the sovereignty of God.
- Resolved, never to do my job any differently than I would if my boss were standing right behind me at all times.
- Resolved, never to debate theology out of a spirit of pride.
- Resolved, never to blow off an opportunity to help someone for the sake of a televised sporting event.
- Resolved, when I feel myself envious of an unregenerate person, to imagine being in their place on Judgment Day.
- Resolved, to wake up extra-early on Sunday morning and do all I can to prepare my heart to worship.
- Resolved, never to think I am as repentant or as humble as I ought to be, and to realize that if I think I am, it is a sure sign that I am not.
- Resolved, when I give someone my word that I will be at a certain place at a certain time, to do everything in my power to keep the appointment regardless of what difficulties I should meet with.
- Resolved, when I am impatient with someone, or inconvenienced by them, to remember to see all meetings as divine appointments.
- Resolved, to strive to see the glory and wisdom of God in all things, even the smallest and most trivial.
- Resolved, when I feel the urge to sin, to imagine myself walking up to the cross as Jesus hangs there and sticking a knife into his side.
- Resolved, to leap for joy if I am counted worthy to be reviled for the name of Jesus.
- Resolved, never to speak anything about anyone that I would be afraid of them finding out what I said about them word for word.
- Resolved, when I feel road rage coming on, to act the way I think John Piper would act when he's driving.
- Resolved, to memorize, and never grow weary of fighting to keep these resolutions, no matter how unsuccessful I may be.
