I just found out that a 35-year tradition will be ending this year as ESPN takes over Monday Night Football for ABC. So I will make the same plea to ESPN that I have been making to ABC for the past ten years.
Dear ESPN, I know it's a tradition to have a football game on Monday night. But this presents a serious problem for me and I hope you can sympathize. You see, I have to work on Monday nights, which means I only get to watch the first quarter of the game. For the other three quarters I have to listen to Marv "trim the toupee" Albert and Boomer "I would've had a Super Bowl ring if it wasn't for Joe Montana" Esiason give the play-by-play on the radio while I work. I have to burn a vacation day every time the Vikings play on Monday night, but for the rest of the games I have to listen to the radio, which gets lousy AM reception where I work. Surely you can see my dilema here.
Perhaps you have noticed that the ratings have been down for MNF over the past ten years. I assure you that this is not due to the recent success of shows like Desperate Housewives and American Idol. This is directly due to the fact that people like me have not been able to watch the games. Be smart and reschedule the game for a more fan-friendly time like, say, 7:30 a.m. Central, Tuesday morning. It would be great. Your only competition would be Katie Couric and Willard Scott and it would give me plenty of time to get home, grab a snack, and plop down in my recliner.
I've already started working on the new theme song. It would go something like this: "The alarm clock goes off to give us the warning...All my rowdy friends are here for Tuesday morning!"
