Okay, since Randy Moss's butt seems to be the main topic of
conversation in my town this week, I'd better weigh in on my opinion.
As everybody knows, in last Sunday's game against the Packers, after
Moss scored his second touchdown in the fourth quarter he turned his
back to the crowd and pretended to drop his pants and moon the Lambeau
faithful. I admit, when I first saw it I thought it was a pretty
classless way to celebrate a touchdown, but I was a little more
concerned with the fact that the Vikings were about to end the Packers'
season so I didn't really care. The way Joe Buck and the rest of the
FOX crew described it you would have thought that it was worse than the
Janet Jackson incident in last year's Super Bowl.
After
hearing the story behind it however, I have to give Moss credit for
originality. It seems that the Packer fans have a tradition where they
stand outside Lambeau field after a game and collectively moon the
opposing players as their team bus pulls away from the stadium. (not
much else to do on a Sunday night in Wisconsin) So Randy Moss, after
witnessing this brilliant display of team spirit several times over his
career came up with the perfect way to respond. He didn't do anything
obscene (ehem, Jake Plummer) or violent (ehem, Ron Artest). It was one
of the most clever touchdown celebrations I've ever seen and perfectly
suited to Green Bay fans. In fact, I'm thinking of using it myself
sometime. Maybe next time I'm in a heated argument with an Arminian and
he screams at me, "You stupid Calvinists are always quoting from
Romans!" Instead of trying to come up with some profound theological
response I'll just turn my back to him and drop trow. "Oh yeah? Here's
what I think of your theology!" Umm, okay, maybe not. But in Moss's
situation it was pretty clever. He lost a few points in my book last
week with his KFAN interview but he made up for it this week. I just
think it's hilarious how the media has blown the whole thing out of
proportion. Some TV stations won't even show the replay. Yes, TV
stations that broadcast such shows as Friends, Will and Grace, and Jerry Springer
refuse to show something as offensive as Randy Moss giving a fake moon.
As for the effect this will have on the outcome of next week's game, I
think it can only be good. The entire team seems to have bonded
together with this us-against-the-world mentality and this can only
flame that fire.
